Places to Rock

Last night Elwood's on Prince William hosted a good free show featuring the Wooden Wives and Gary Flanagan.

While I don't go out and about much I was impressed with the crowd that congregated for the show so near Christmas.

Live music venues - particularly ones where shows are free - encourage people to hang around the uptown.

Hopefully this helps create a community where creative professionals can thrive.

Urban Planning Changes

I have moved the Urban Planning elements of this blog to a new place - http://urbanplans.blogspot.com

I will be using that blog to discuss housing and development issues from now on.

Starbury

This is not a housing or development story, nor is it local. I was watching the Daily Show and saw an clip about basketball player Stephon Marbury. Marbury has released a line of affordable athletic wear in the US under the name Starbury. I admire the fact that as a star player this guy is willing to put some of his effort and money into creating gear for kids who want to play basketball and can't afford the higher end brands. I'm impressed.

Here is an article from The Advocate that talks about the man and the shoes.
The brand's website is: http://www.starbury.com/.

Robertson's Wharf

I'm curious of the time frame for the Robertson's Wharf development (www.robertsonswharf.com). There has been work done on putting up barriers and some work done on the ground, but I would love to know when this is supposed to be done.

Rockwood Park - Back Trails

The back trails of Rockwood Park seem so under used. I have been trying to appreciate the park better and have discovered great places to walk, bike and enjoy.

Here is a link to a Rockwood Park trails map: http://www.tourismsaintjohn.com/files/upload/Rockwood_Park_Trails.PDF. The best trails seem to have been created by cyclists and might veer out of the park on to neighbouring land a bit. They are not all marked on the map, but its a good starting place if you are looking to walk more trails than just the paved ones. I suggest starting at the rear near the zoo.

Queen Mary II

It is interesting to see the Queen Mary II in the Port City with an oil tanker in the background.

Highland Games

Here are two pictures I took in Fredericton of the Highland Games this past july.

Uptown Lights

Last night I went uptown and was very comfortable snapping away, stopping in the middle of Water Street at one point and sitting on the steps of Saint John High for a prolonged period of time. I used to fear looking suspicious – now it’s fun.

It's a comfortable city to be in at night.

Utility Easement

I went for a bike ride along the utility easement in Rockwood Park. It was a pretty rugged trip and much of the biking was actually walking with bike in hand. The path crosses by some nice views. It would be a great place to relax if it wasn't for the powerlines and utility roads.
